Stress-Testing the Structure and the Buyer

Faraday’s take

Stress-testing is not forecasting — it is pushing on a structure to find where it breaks and measuring the cushion in front of each fault line. Do it in layers: the asset's decay curve, the operator's equity cushion, the funding's covenant and refinancing headroom, the contracts' concentration, the system's circularity. The sector's fatal habit is shocking one layer at a time when in a downturn they all move together. And every cushion is downstream of one master variable — the AI labs' durable, independent, well-funded appetite for compute. Underwrite the buyer from the demand down, and the whole stack of claims on that appetite finally comes into focus.

Knowledge check

Why is underwriting the AI lab's demand the master variable behind every other cushion in these financing structures?

Show the answer

Because the labs are the ultimate source of demand — the anchor tenants behind the neoclouds and the end-buyers behind the chip orders. The contracts pledged as security in the financing are labs' promises to pay, often backed more by the labs' access to capital markets than by current revenue. If lab demand weakens from a funding squeeze, an efficiency breakthrough, or slower adoption, utilization falls, contracted revenue is impaired, chip orders drop, and any investor who funded a lab takes a double hit. Every downstream cushion depends on the buyer's health.
