Contractual vs. Physical Clean Power: What You Are Actually Buying

Faraday’s take

Here is the first thing to get straight, because everything else depends on it: when an operator says a data center runs on clean energy, they almost always mean it on paper, not on the wire. Electrons from a wind farm and electrons from a gas plant mix in the grid and become indistinguishable. What separates clean from dirty is a certificate — an accounting instrument — not a physical channel. Faraday's read: the whole clean-procurement field is a market built to make an invisible attribute tradeable. Once you accept that the product is a claim rather than a current, the strategies stop looking like greenwashing games and start looking like what they are: different grades of rigor applied to the same underlying question of whether your load actually caused more clean generation to exist.

Knowledge check

Why can't a data center guarantee that the specific electrons powering its servers came from a particular wind farm?

Show the answer

Because the grid pools electricity from all connected generators into a common flow. Electrons are fungible and indistinguishable at the point of consumption, so clean-power claims rest on contractual accounting (certificates) rather than on any physical routing of specific electrons to a specific building.
