Power Purchase Agreements: How Buyers Finance the Turbines

Faraday’s take

The power purchase agreement is the workhorse of serious clean procurement, and it is worth understanding as a financing instrument dressed up as an energy contract. A developer wants to build a wind or solar farm but cannot borrow the money without a buyer promising to purchase the output for a decade or two. The data-center operator steps in and makes that promise. In doing so it hands the developer a bankable revenue stream, the lender says yes, and the project gets built. Faraday's read: the PPA is where corporate demand actually turns into steel and silicon. Certificates are accounting; a PPA is causation. That is why it is the instrument additionality-minded buyers reach for first.

Knowledge check

In plain terms, what does a long-term power purchase agreement give a renewable developer that lets a project get financed?

Show the answer

It gives the developer a bankable, long-term revenue commitment — a creditworthy buyer promising to purchase the project's output for a decade or two. Lenders will finance construction against that predictable future income, which is exactly what turns a proposed project into a built one, making the buyer's purchase additional.
