Workforce Foundations for AI Infrastructure
Glossary
- Apprenticeship
- A structured, multi-year training program combining paid on-the-job work under experienced journeymen with classroom instruction, and the primary way skilled trades such as electricians are produced.
- Commissioning
- The final process of testing, integrating, and proving every system in a facility under realistic conditions before it carries live load, performed by specialists whose scarcity can gate the energization date.
- Critical path
- The sequence of dependent tasks that determines the shortest possible duration of a project; in data center builds it typically runs through specialized electrical, mechanical, and commissioning work.
- Critical-facilities technician
- A skilled operations worker who maintains and monitors a data center's power and cooling systems around the clock, often drawn from military, industrial, or technical-college backgrounds.
- Journeyman
- A tradesperson who has completed an apprenticeship and is qualified to perform the full scope of their trade independently, as distinct from a still-training apprentice.
- Method of procedure
- A scripted, reviewed sequence of steps for performing a significant task on live systems, used in operations to ensure maintenance follows a safe, planned process rather than improvisation.
- Project labor agreement
- A pre-hire arrangement negotiated before construction that sets wages and dispute procedures for all trades on a job and commits unions to supply the workforce and avoid work stoppages.
- Traveler
- A skilled worker who relocates temporarily from another region to work a specific project, often supported by per diems and housing, allowing a metro to host a project larger than its local workforce could staff.
