Who Actually Runs a Finished Facility

Faraday’s take

A data center does not run itself; it runs on a standing crew of critical facilities technicians and a thin backbone of power, mechanical, and controls engineers. Steel and transformers arrive on a schedule you can draw on a chart. The judgment that turns a three-in-the-morning alarm into a non-event cannot be ordered, only grown. That asymmetry is the first and most concrete form of the workforce ceiling: a building can be mechanically complete and still unready, because it does not yet have the people who can safely energize it, commission it, and hold the line through a failover.

Knowledge check

Why can a data center be mechanically complete yet still not ready to accept a demanding tenant?

Show the answer

Because the physical plant is only half the asset. The building still needs a trained, rotating crew of critical facilities technicians and qualified engineers to safely energize and commission it and to staff it around the clock, and that team must be recruited from a shallow pool, trained on the specific systems, and retained long enough to develop real operating judgment.
