The Systems That Run the Building

Faraday’s take

Faraday's read: the two-layer split — BMS for reflex, DCIM for awareness — is the fastest way to size up a facility team. Ask which vendors run each layer and how connected they are. A conservative, proven BMS from an industrial house paired with a DCIM layer that genuinely models live capacity is a sign of an operator that reads its own building. A rich BMS whose data never reaches a real management layer is a facility running blind above the reflexes — safe minute to minute, but flying without instruments on the decisions that set its economics.

What is the core difference between a building management system (BMS) and DCIM?

Show the answer

The BMS is a real-time control system — the reflex layer — that senses the physical plant (power, cooling, environment) and acts to hold it within safe limits second by second, using industrial control protocols. DCIM is a management and planning layer — the awareness layer — that aggregates information about the whole facility (racks, power provisioned versus drawn, cooling and space available) to support capacity decisions over hours to years, prevent stranded capacity, and translate the facility's state into the language of economics. One controls; the other plans.
