Who Builds It: Construction and the Skilled Trades

Faraday’s take

A data center is, for a year or two, one of the most trade-intensive construction sites in the modern economy. The glamour is in the chips, but the critical path runs through electricians pulling medium-voltage cable, pipefitters welding cooling loops, and millwrights setting generators and switchgear. These are the workers who determine whether a building energizes on schedule. Understand who they are, how they are organized, and how brutally their availability gates the timeline, and you understand why two identical designs on identical budgets can finish a year apart. The trades are not a commodity input. They are the pace-setters of the entire build.

Knowledge check

Which trades tend to sit on the critical path of a data center build, and why does their availability set the schedule?

Show the answer

Electricians, pipefitters and mechanical trades, and millwrights installing and commissioning power and cooling systems; because their specialized work cannot be skipped, parallelized freely, or done by less-trained substitutes, their availability directly determines when the building can be energized.
