Disclosure, Reporting, and Sustainability as a Siting Driver

Faraday’s take

Measurement without disclosure is a diary. What turns carbon and water accounting into a real constraint on your business is the growing requirement to report it publicly, in standardized form, to investors and regulators who can act on what they read. Two frameworks, one born from a financial-stability worry and one from an investor questionnaire, now shape how the world's largest infrastructure is scrutinized. Once you see how these reporting regimes tie into capital, permitting, and customer contracts, the thesis of this whole course clicks into place: sustainability is not a reporting chore bolted on at the end. It is a first-order input to where you can build, how you can finance it, and whether you can keep operating.

What was the core purpose of the TCFD framework, and why did a financial-stability body create it rather than an environmental agency?

Show the answer

The Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures was created to get companies to disclose the financial risks that climate change poses to their business, so that investors and lenders could price that risk. It was convened by the Financial Stability Board, a financial regulator, because the concern was systemic financial risk: mispriced climate exposure across the economy could threaten the stability of the financial system, making it a financial-oversight issue rather than purely an environmental one.
