Talent Flows Between Companies as Intelligence

Faraday’s take

The movement of specialized people between companies is one of the richest, least-watched datasets you have, because it captures decisions at the moment they are made rather than the moment they are announced. An arrival reveals intent a firm would rather keep quiet: hire away a nuclear-licensing executive and you have just told the market where you are betting. A wave of departures foreshadows delays that only surface in filings a year later. And a team lift-out is a funded, deliberate assault on a market. Read moves in cohorts, weight the narrow specialists, and the labor market forecasts the product market.

Knowledge check

What makes a team lift-out a stronger competitive signal than a series of unrelated individual hires?

Show the answer

A lift-out moves a group who already know how to work together, carrying their playbook, vendor relationships, and trust intact. It takes real capital and conviction to move a whole team, so it marks a deliberate, well-funded attempt to compete, whereas scattered individual hires may be idiosyncratic and carry no coordinated intent.
