Equipment Breakdown and the Engineering-Led Insurer

Faraday’s take

Faraday's read: fire and flood get the attention, but the losses that recur are electromechanical — a transformer fails, a chiller seizes, a switchgear fault arcs. The load-bearing variable is that these are not perils the building is exposed to; they are the building failing at itself. This is why the dominant data-center insurers are engineering organisations that sell inspection first and indemnity second. The premium is the smaller half of what you are buying.

Knowledge check

How does equipment breakdown cover differ in character from standard property (fire and flood) cover, and why does that difference favour engineering-led insurers?

Show the answer

Equipment breakdown covers sudden internal, electromechanical failure of the plant itself — transformers, switchgear, chillers, generators — rather than damage from an external peril, so the loss originates inside the insured machinery; that makes inspection, testing regimes, and engineering standards the primary tools for reducing it, which structurally favours insurers built around loss-prevention engineering rather than pure actuarial pricing.
