Reading the Public Root-Cause Analysis

Faraday’s take

Here's my read: a published outage report is a rare gift. Someone else paid the bill in downtime, lost revenue, and a bad week, and then handed you the lesson for free. Read it the way a pilot reads an accident report, not for the drama of the fireball but for the three decisions upstream that made the fireball inevitable. The prose will be careful, sometimes bloodless. Behind that careful prose is a team that learned something expensive. Your job is to inherit it without paying again.

Knowledge check

A cloud provider publishes a root-cause analysis after a regional outage. What is the single most useful thing to extract from it, and why?

Show the answer

The latent condition, not the trigger. Almost any trigger could have set off the failure; the point of value is the pre-existing design weakness that turned a small event into a large one, because that weakness likely exists in other systems, including yours.
