Reading Capital Expenditure
A capital spending figure is a definition before it is a number. The audited cash flow line records cash paid for property and equipment; the headline figures companies prefer often add finance leases, and none of them isolates artificial intelligence data centers. Buildings meant to last decades sit in the same total as chips that age in a few years, and buildings leased on operating terms are left out entirely. Faraday's read is that arguments about which hyperscaler spends more usually turn out to be arguments about what is being counted. Write the definition next to every figure, read the lease footnote alongside it, and most of the confusion disappears.

Why can Meta's headline capital expenditure figure differ from the purchases of property and equipment line in its cash flow statement?
Show the answer
Meta's headline figure includes principal payments on finance leases, which do not appear in the purchases line when the asset is acquired. Finance leases give the company assets without an up-front cash payment, and the cash shows up later in the financing section. Adding them back gives a fuller picture of what the company is acquiring.
