Underwriting, Tech E&O, and Insurability as a Siting Constraint

Faraday’s take

Underwriting is where the abstract becomes concrete. The insurer reads the operator's security posture and turns it into price, limit, and condition — which means the security team's decisions are now written into the balance sheet whether anyone planned it that way. Tech E&O extends the same logic to operators who have quietly become technology vendors. Follow the chain to its end and the thesis is unavoidable: after power and water, the next question that decides whether infrastructure can be built and financed is whether the risk it carries can be insured at all. Insurability has become a siting constraint. Treat it as one.

Knowledge check

State the course's central thesis and explain the chain of reasoning that leads from cyber underwriting to it.

Show the answer

The thesis is that insurability is the next siting constraint after power and water. The chain: cyber underwriting prices an operator's security posture into premium, limit, and conditions; where controls are weak or exposures are systemic, coverage becomes expensive, sublimited, conditional, or unavailable; lenders and investors require adequate insurance to finance and operate critical infrastructure; therefore, if a site or operation cannot obtain viable cyber (and tech E&O) coverage on acceptable terms, it cannot be financed or run — making insurability a hard constraint on where and whether infrastructure gets built, alongside the availability of power and water.
