The Compute Map Redrawn: Markets, Consequences, and What Comes Next

Faraday’s take

Rules have effects, and the effects of chip controls are now visible on the ground. A global market that once flowed freely has been segmented into zones. Buyers hoard, prices distort, gray markets flourish, and companies reorganize their entire supply chains around the new geography. Some of this was intended; much of it was not. This final module steps back from the mechanics to ask the strategic question that matters most: has reshaping the compute map achieved what it set out to do, and what is the world it is building? The answers are genuinely contested, and a practitioner should hold them with appropriate humility.

Knowledge check

Name one significant market consequence that has emerged from tightening compute export controls.

Any of: market segmentation into compute zones, stockpiling and hoarding of accelerators ahead of new rules, price distortions and premiums in restricted regions, growth of gray-market and smuggling channels, or accelerated investment in non-U.S. domestic chip capacity.
