Durable Versus Flameout: Reading the Signals

Faraday’s take

Neoclouds do not fail for mysterious reasons; they fail in a handful of legible ways, and the warning lights are visible long before the crash. Durability shows up as contracted, diversified demand, secured cheap power, a debt schedule matched to the true life of the chips, and a widening base of independent customers. Fragility shows up as one dominant tenant, financing that outlives its collateral, power bought on the spot market, and growth that depends on the next chip generation never arriving early. The signals are not hidden; they are in the contract terms, the power agreements, and the depreciation assumptions. Read them and you can call the winners and the flameouts a year before the market does.

Knowledge check

What are the two or three signals that most reliably separate a durable neocloud from a probable flameout?

Show the answer

Durable operators show contracted, diversified demand secured by creditworthy counterparties, cheap and locked-in power, and debt whose repayment schedule matches the true competitive life of the chips. Flameouts show a single dominant tenant, power bought on volatile spot terms, and financing that amortizes more slowly than the fleet loses its earning power.
