Scoring Frameworks and Decision Matrices

Faraday’s take

Once you accept that no site wins on all six variables, you need a disciplined way to compare imperfect options. That is what a scoring framework does: it forces you to state your priorities as weights, grade each site against them, and produce a ranking you can defend. Done well, it turns a swirl of opinions into a decision a room full of skeptical executives can interrogate. Done badly, it launders bias into a false number. Faraday's read: the matrix is only as good as the honesty of its weights and the rigor of its gates. Learn to build one, and learn where it lies to you.

Knowledge check

What is the purpose of a weighted scoring matrix in site selection, and what is its main danger?

Show the answer

Its purpose is to compare imperfect sites consistently by assigning weights to each variable, scoring every site against them, and producing a defensible ranking. Its main danger is that arbitrary or biased weights and scores can produce a precise-looking number that merely disguises a predetermined preference, so the discipline of the inputs matters more than the tidiness of the output.
