The Primary Roster: Six Markets, Six Power Stories

Faraday’s take

The primary markets are not interchangeable big dots on a map; each is a specific bargain. Phoenix sells climate and low hazard, Dallas sells regulatory speed on an isolated grid, Columbus was willed up by one utility's headroom, Chicago rents out an irreplaceable network position, and Atlanta caught the overflow when Virginia clogged. What they share is graduation: each proved it can deliver power at scale and keep delivering it, and that proof is what buys liquidity. But every one of them is now straining on the same input, which is precisely why the demand starts spilling into the second tier.

Knowledge check

Chicago is a high-tax, high-cost, cold-climate market, yet it remains firmly in the primary tier. What scarce asset keeps it there, and what general principle does that illustrate?

Show the answer

Chicago holds one of North America's most important carrier hotels and interconnection points, a downtown building where a huge share of the continent's networks meet. That network density is irreplaceable for low-latency, connectivity-centric workloads and took decades to accumulate. It illustrates that a primary market does not have to lead on power or price if it owns something scarcer that compounds and locks in over time, just as dense fiber did in Ashburn.
