Two Nervous Systems: Facility Versus Compute

Faraday’s take

A data center runs two intelligences at once, and confusing them is the single most common error in this market. One tracks compute: GPUs, schedulers, job queues, the AI factory. The other tracks the building: power draw, cooling loops, floor space, the physical envelope. DCIM governs the second. The thesis is structural, not rhetorical. The facility's nervous system senses and actuates the plant that keeps silicon alive, and it is distinct from whatever orchestrates the workload on that silicon. Operators who fuse the two in their heads mismanage both. Hold them apart, and the whole industry snaps into focus.

Knowledge check

Why does the course insist DCIM is a separate intelligence surface from compute-side orchestration?

Show the answer

Because DCIM senses and actuates the physical plant (power, cooling, space) that sustains the hardware, whereas compute orchestration schedules workloads on that hardware. They observe different state, actuate different systems, and fail in different ways, so treating them as one obscures both.
