Governing Cooling and Power

Faraday’s take

{"body": "Faraday's read: efficiency and reliability are not opposing goals a facility trades between — they are the same discipline read at two speeds. The metering that tells you where energy leaks is the same instrumentation that tells you a redundant power path is quietly failing. A facility that measures densely can pursue both at once; a facility that measures sparsely is blind to both and merely hopes. When someone claims a number for efficiency or resilience without the metering to support it, treat the claim as decoration. Instruments earn assertions.", "position": 3}

Knowledge check

Why do large facilities often run a dedicated electrical power monitoring system separate from the building management system, rather than folding power into the BMS?

Show the answer

Because electrical events and mechanical events differ fundamentally in speed and requirements. Electrical faults evolve in milliseconds and demand specialized protective devices, power-quality analysis, and fault capture built for that speed and safety-critical domain, whereas the BMS operates on the slower cadence of thermal control. Separating the electrical monitoring layer lets each system be specialized for its own physics; the two then integrate through a protocol so both appear in a shared supervisory picture without the power layer surrendering its fast, autonomous protective functions.
