The Analyst Economy: Who Speaks and Who Pays

Faraday’s take

Here's Faraday's read: an analyst house is a business, and its business shapes its output. Gartner sells seats to the enterprises it advises and services to the vendors it rates. IDC counts units and revenue. Neither is corrupt, but both are structured. Before you cite a Magic Quadrant or a market-share table, know who commissioned it, who was surveyed, and what got left out of frame. The number is downstream of the method, and the method is downstream of the business model. Read the masthead before you read the headline, and you will misread far fewer of them.

Knowledge check

Why does knowing an analyst firm's revenue model change how you should read its published research?

Show the answer

Because the revenue model shapes coverage and framing: seat-subscription houses like Gartner optimize for what paying enterprise buyers want decided, vendor-funded services can tilt emphasis toward the rated, and unit-counting shops like IDC frame the world in the categories they can measure. The business model determines the method, and the method determines the number, so the funding structure is context you need before you trust the finding.
